    On December 2, 2011, Ambassador Robert P. Jackson and Babette Jackson hosted a dinner at their residence for the U.S. Government-sponsored International Visitor Leadership Program, the Community College Initiative Program and one Fulbright exchange scholar.

    Embassy Cameroon Introduces the Bee

    On Tuesday, November 16, a packed crowd sat on the edge of their seats to watch the top 25 spellers compete. The Deputy Chief of Mission, Lisa Peterson, welcomed the audience while the Ambassador’s wife presented certificates. The Spelling Bee is a foreign concept in Cameroon. Journalists from major news outlets remained for the entire 2 hour competition and interviewed the first and second place winners along with their coaches.

    Ambassador Jackson Holds Reception for Biodiversity and Conservation Expert

    United States Ambassador to Cameroon, Robert P. Jackson, held a reception on Monday October 24, in honor of Dr. Richard Ruggiero, a biodiversity and conservation expert who is visiting Cameroon. The Cameroon Minister of Forestry and Wildlife, Elvis Ngole Ngole, was present at the reception along several Ambassadors, and representatives of international and local NGOs.

    Broadening the scope of “Read America” Programs

    On October 5, 2011, 30 elementary school kids from Lady Bird Primary School paid a visit to the Information resource center of the Embassy as part of our “Read America” program. Read America offers an innovative approach, using scholastic books, to teach and encourage reading skills in secondary and elementary schools in Cameroon.

    On September 30, the U.S. Ambassador, Robert P. Jackson and his wife, Babette Jackson celebrated the importance of artistic expression and the cultural similarities between both countries in an Art-in-Embassies exhibition.

    Embassy Yaounde Pauses to Remember 9/11

    On Friday September 9, 2011, over 150 people attended a remembrance ceremony of the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2001, which honored the lives of the 3000 men and women from over 80 countries worldwide who lost their lives as well as the service and heroism displayed on that tragic day.

    From August 30 through September 2, entrepreneurs and graduates from ESSEC in Douala were invited to attend a 4 day workshop at the American Language Center to strengthen their business skills and broaden their investment opportunities.

    U.S. Military and BIR Partner for Medical Outreach Program

    Military medical personnel from the United States Naval Forces Africa joined the Cameroon Bataillon d’ Intervention Rapide (BIR) to coordinate and execute a medical outreach program in the Bakassi peninsula. As part of the “Africa Partnership Station 2011” program, the two military powers joined forces to help the local population with much needed medical care. The medical outreach program took place between July 25 and 28 in Jabane.

    Cameroonian Journalists Skilled on Election Reporting Techniques

    Paris-based American print/radio journalist and Editor Elizabeth Bryant conducted a three-day seminar workshop on election reporting for thirty Cameroonian journalists in Limbe in the South West region on August 2-4, 2011.

    On June 29, the Embassy welcomed over 500 guests onto the Embassy’s grounds to celebrate the 235th anniversary of U.S. independence and the 50th anniversary of the U.S. Peace Corps.
