Ambassador Garvey Urges Muslim Parents to Send Girls to School

Some 128 needy girls from the Far North Province received scholarship packages from Ambassador Janet Garvey during a solemn ceremony held at ENIEG Maroua on November 14, 2007. Scholarship packages awarded through the Ambassador’s Girls Scholarship Program, included uniforms, tuition, transportation, room and board, and books.  In her remarks, Ambassador Garvey outlined the importance of girls’ education for the welfare of the society. “No country is rich enough not to use 50 per cent of its human talents,” she told the audience. Parents, recipient children and members of AFEMDI, the partner organization, all expressed immense gratitude to the U.S. Government for this life-saving gesture. “Many of these children would never have been able to go to school if not for the U.S. Government,” they said. One of the children indicated that she can now dream of a bright career and why not becoming an Ambassador like Ambassador Garvey. (Photo Gallery  | Speech )
