University of Buea American Corner 2005/2006 season Kick-Off

The 2005/2006 season was kicked-off at the University of Buea American Corner with a presentation on the opportunities and benefits provided by having an American Corner in the community.  Around 40 community members, University staff and administrators gathered to discuss what the American Corner can contribute to the University community and community at large.  Special emphasis was placed on how the American Corner can help the University and city of Buea come together in light of the violence that has occurred in the past year.

This discussion was followed by a workshop on American Culture for around 100 local children.  The film, “An American Tail” and various other materials were used to create a fun lively afternoon of conversation.

IRC Director J.P. Ghonda had a day-long training session with the librarians of the American Corner at the University of Buea.  Some of the issues discussed were: 1) preparing and implementing cultural programs; 2) using books and electronic Journals for debates/discussions; 3) American Corners: objectives and operations. The librarians were also introduced to a variety of useful websites for collecting U.S. Government information (InfoUSA,  Yaounde U.S. Embassy Website, International Information Programs, USA.gov, Ben’s Guide to the Government) as well as to more general websites likely to benefit the University community (Findarticles.com, How Stuff Works, the CIA World Fact Book, the Internet Library for Librarians, the Librarian’s Index to the Internet, etc.).
