The Public Affairs Section Exposes Church Youth Group to the United States through the Information Resource Center
May 24, 2006
Following a U.S. Embassy tour of a local church group organization, Public Affairs Section Yaoundé hosted the final stop at the Information Resource Center (IRC). Some 30 youth from ages 12 to 18 were treated to a presentation about what an embassy does, who the embassy represents as well as a comparative description of U.S. and Cameroonian educational systems. The group also saw projected images of major U.S. cities and school campuses. Each student went away with a 4-color map of the U.S., a printed overview of the United States (relative size, ethnic groups and so on) and a fact sheet about the study in the United States.
The session clearly piqued the students’ curiosity for study in the U.S. context. During the Q&A, questions surfaced about language proficiency, grade requirements and whether sports scholarships were available. Students also wanted to know more about the age requirements for becoming a member to the IRC and whether the facility was open for research on schools.
