Fifty Years of Diplomatic Relations – a Commemorative Photography Exhibit at the U.S. Ambassador’s Residence
Yaounde, June 28, 2007
The U.S. Embassy invites local and international media to an avant-première of Photo Focus on Diplomacy, a photography exhibit at the U.S. Ambassador’s Residence that commemorates fifty years of diplomatic relations between the United States and Cameroon. In May 1957, the first American Consul was assigned to Cameroon. Three months later, in July 1957, a U.S. Consulate was opened in Yaounde. The exhibit is a compilation of 121 photographs that crisscross history and the multiplicity of domains implicit in the workings of diplomacy: trade, development assistance, military engagement, history, religious exchange, investment, education, culture, sports, music, protocol and … the media!
The guided tour will be conducted by U.S. Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Richard W. Nelson and Project Editor Judith Ravin. The entire editorial production team will be on hand as well as representatives from the Ministry of External Relations who are themselves undertaking preparations for the “golden jubilee” fifty-year mark.
A companion publication, also entitled Photo Focus on Diplomacy, incorporates selected photos from the exhibit plus narrative texts to serve as a memorable take-home tribute to the last fifty years of eventful exchange in the bilateral relationship between the United States and Cameroon. The press will receive copies of this unique fifty-year commemorative edition.
