At 9:00 am on September 11, 2006, the U.S. Embassy in Yaoundé organized a ceremony to commemorate the Fifth Anniversary of 9/11. The ceremony was attended by the American community as well as key officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Muslim, Catholic and Protestant religious leaders; Yaoundé I University faculty and the Cameroonian press. After some brief remarks, Ambassador R. Niels Marquardt read a proclamation by President George Bush to mark the day the U.S. Congress has designated as “Patriot Day.” Ambassador Marquardt closed the ceremony by planting on the Embassy grounds a mango tree, symbol of hope and a focal point in Yaoundé in memory of September 11.
