U.S. Nonprofit Distributes 500 Computers in Cameroon: Montgomery County of Maryland Continues to Bridge the Digital Divide
U.S. Ambassador Janet E. Garvey held a ceremony and reception at her Residence, on January 4, 2008, to commence official distribution of 250 certificates to 23 different schools, non-governmental organizations and offices throughout Cameroon who were slated to receive computer donations from Technology Outreach Projects (TOP) and Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), in the United States. Of the total 1,000 refurbished computers that TOP/MCPS will distribute in all ten provinces of the country this year, this first shipment contains 500. On January 5, 2008, Mr. Ousmanou distributed the remaining 250 computers to the Ministry of Basic Education. Basic Education Minister Haman Adama told the public and press that she plans to donate 25 computers to each province for its schools that are most in need. In December 2006, TOP made its first donation of computers: 150 to the Council of Douala III.
Ambassador Garvey called the collaboration between Technology Outreach Projects Executive Director Yakoubou Ousmanou, Confederation of African Football President Issa Hayatou, the Ministry of Basic Education, the Ministry of Secondary Education and Douala II and Douala III city councils a model partnership that for obtaining resources in Cameroon with far-reaching consequences.
