Ambassador Marquardt visits some projects in the Far North of Cameroon and plants trees to commemorate the Earth Day
Earth Day Tree Planting at Point Vert Primary School, Maroua
On April 22, 2006, Ambassador Marquardt took part in a symbolic Earth Day planting of some fifty trees in the expansive courtyard of an elementary school. The event was co-sponsored by the Association for the Environment and Struggle Against Desertification (APELD, as per its name in French). Young school children, instructors, and administrators turned out to learn about the need to stop the onslaught of the desert and to value trees for the land and climate protection they provide. Organizers further raised awareness about environmentally friendly technologies, such as solar cooking pots. The media of the Far North was mobilized to cover Ambassador R. Niels Marquardt’s school visit.
As a result, teachers and students alike were caught up in the contagious frenzy to find alternative solutions that solve everyday problems while protecting the environment. The Ambassador’s presence underscored the seriousness of the issue, while the venue itself played up the children’s role in the future of Cameroon’s ability to protect its natural resources. Wide coverage was assured by the government-owned daily, government-run radio and television, independent television, and regional weekly print media.
