Elections 2008: Historic Hope and Change
The U.S. Embassy in Cameroon hosted two election parties November 4 to celebrate democracy and observe the results of the U.S. presidential and legislative elections. In Yaounde, more than 250 Cameroonians, Americans, and members of the international community gathered at the residence of Ambassador Janet Garvey in Yaounde, while an additional 200 guests were hosted by Deputy Chief of Mission Stephen R. Fox in Douala. Throughout the all-night events, biographies of the two presidential candidates played, televisions broadcast the latest electoral results, and Embassy employees and American citizens explained the complexities of the Electoral College system and shared their own personal voting experiences. The gathered crowds remained until well after the announcement of Senator Obama as the President-elect of the United States, watching the concession and victory speeches of the two candidates with great interest. Leaving the Ambassador’s Residence and the Douala party shortly after 7:00 a.m. the next morning – nearly 10 hours after the event began – bleary-eyed but smiling guests remarked on the historic nature of the elections and the lessons the American democratic process could teach Cameroon and the rest of the world.
