Internet training workshop for Teachers of English as a Second Language (TESL) organized by the IRC / PAS

On March 08, 2006, the IRC organized a one day Internet Training Workshop for Teachers of English as a Second Language in the town of Douala. The 17 teachers from different secondary schools in town as well as government provincial inspectors for English teaching were introduced to the use of Internet for research purposes and to the numerous resources, megasites and sites with teaching and reference materials useful for TESL. The resources offered by the Office of English Language Programs, in particular the English Language Forum magazine and other publications were shown to the participants who were discovering it for the first time. Prints out versions of some publications of the Office of English Language Programs were handed over to the participants welcomed by the CAO Noelle Wright-Young. They were also provided with copies of Info USA CD-Rom. The training took place at the American Language Center in Douala.

The result was excellent. In their capacity as teachers of English, they expose Cameroonian French students to a segment of cognitive, social and linguistic development and constitute cruxes for the development of an educational dialogue between the United States and Cameroon. Most of them were using Internet for research purpose for their first time. They hailed the embassy for opening the door of the gigantic library that Internet is, and for showing them on which shelves to search for the specific information they need.
