The United States Embassy Celebrates July 4th (National Independence Day)

Independence Day 2004 commemorates the 228th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence. Every year on the Fourth of July, Americans take the time to remember the struggles of their forefathers in removing the chains of tyranny and forging a new nation that would be independent of any foreign nation or power, a nation that would always be based upon democratic values and ideals, and which would always respect the rights of its citizens. The US Declaration of Independence states: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that their Creator with certain unalienable Rights endows them that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed."

During the Embassy's celebration, US Ambassador George M. Staples observed that, "George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin all believed very strongly that the right of the people to choose their own government and their own destiny was fundamental and essential. This belief is just as true today as it was then, and something that every human being deserves, no matter which country they live in."
