U.S. Embassy Yaounde Sponsors a Youth Entrepreneurship Seminar in Douala

On July 16, 2009, close to seventy university students gathered at the Douala American Language Center for a “Youth Entrepreneurship” seminar organized by the U.S. Embassy in Yaounde.  Based on Kevin Liles Nouveaux Horizons title “Saisis ta Chance: de Stagiaire à PDG” (Make it Happen: the Hip-Hop Generation Guide to Success), this three-hour program aimed at providing this group of emerging leaders some useful tools for their successful integration in the business and social mainstream. The presentation of Kevin Liles itinerary sparked interesting discussions on the relevance of his 10 success principles to the Cameroonian context which is marred by such challenges as corruption and unemployment.

The Public Affairs Officer, Mr. Richard Johannsen, used the occasion to discuss President Obama’s Accra speech with students, focusing on his message to African youths: “The world will be what you make of it… You can serve in your communities, and harness your energy and education to create new wealth and build new connections to the world.” Participants found the format and contents of the program enriching and motivating.  “This is an invaluable addition to the formal training we receive at the university,” they indicated. Copies of “Saisis ta Chance” were distributed to participants at the end of the seminar.

This seminar was the second of a series of activities built around this very interesting and inspiring Nouveaux Horizons title. Written in a straightforward and accessible style, “Saisis ta Chance” is a very appealing to the youth as it discuses such topical issues like the importance of education, hard work, and respect of business ethics.
