American John Farrell Performs at American Corner in Garoua

On October 30 American John Farrell performed with 60 elementary school students from bilingual schools in Garoua the the Embassy’s American Corner in the Garoua Municipal Library.  The children, aged 6 to10, enjoyed the U.S.-based singer, performer, writer and educator, John Farrell. The performances started with brief remarks by Public Affairs Officer Richard Johannsen to welcome the audiences. Mr. Farrell then engaged the young audience with captivating sing- along songs such as “Hi” and “Hello.”  The children enjoyed the various songs and warmly echoed to the lyrics of the performer. Mr. Farrell encouraged the children to visit libraries and read books to acquire more knowledge and, above all, to share love in their community.  Mr. Farrell’s daughter, Katie, who is a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer in Koza, joined him for some of the songs.  At the end of his performance, each child received a commemorative pen from the U.S. Embassy and their teachers received crayons for their schools.  Mr. Farrell also gave CDs of his songs to the three schools represented and encouraged then to learn and teach other children who did not have the opportunity to attend. This trilling and engaging moment left an impact with the children who did not want the program to end. You could hear them humming the songs as they went home and some asked Mr. Farrell to come back to Garoua. The teachers of the schools could not hide their feelings:  “I wish he had a week to teach us some more techniques in captivating young kids like this,” stated one teacher.

After performing at the American Corner in Garoua Mr. Farrell traveled to the village of Koza where he performed for over 200 people on October 31.  On November 2 he also performed for students and teachers at the American School of Yaounde (ASOY).
