Djabbama!! North and Far North Provinces Warmly Welcome Ambassador Garvey
Ambassador Janet Garvey visited the North and Extreme North provinces from November 11 – 16, 2007. She had meetings with Government officials, Mayors, as well as Lamidos in both provinces. During these encounters, various officials briefed the Ambassador on the realities of their units and the challenges the population faces.
Ambassador Garvey equally visited some important projects that have benefited from US Government assistance over the past years. These include the veterinary laboratory in Garoua, the AES Sonel Dam in Lagdo, rice plantations and water projects funded through the Food for progress initiative, tree planting projects developed by WWF, with financial assistance from the U.S. Embassy.
In Maroua, the capital city of the Far North Province, Ambassador Garvey chaired an Ambassador’s Girls Scholarship Award event and visited Credit du Sahel, a local micro credit organization that greatly supports the development of the community. She used these occasions to urge the predominantly Muslim population of the region to give women a chance by encouraging girls’ education and women access to credit.
Ambassador Garvey also had the opportunity to appraise the contribution of Peace Corps Volunteers in improving the lives of local populations. She chaired an HIV/AIDS Awareness Fare that brought together 20 PCVs, many NGOs and countless community members in Mokolo.
The very warm welcome Ambassador Garvey received throughout her visit was a clear indication of people’s delight to be the first to host her. “We truly feel honored and privileged to have been chosen for your first official visit out of Yaounde.”
