JOINT PRESS RELEASE
French and American Naval Vessels Participate in Joint Maritime Exercise
Yaounde, April 3, 2009
As part of ongoing efforts to assist in building regional partnerships, the French vessel FNS Tonnerre and American ship USS Nashville conducted a joint exercise in Cameroonian waters. The exercise was held just west of Limbe following a visit of the FNS Tonnerre to Douala, during which it conducted a research mission studying insecurity in the Gulf of Guinea, and as the USS Nashville approached Limbe for a port visit as part of its Africa Partnership Station (APS) program.
During the “Passing Exercise,” the Commodore of Africa Partnership Station and a Cameroonian naval officer serving as part of the Nashville’s crew visited the Tonnerre. At the same time, Cameroonian and other African military personnel were transferred from the Tonnerre to the Nashville as part of an on-going professional exchange and will remain onboard the Nashville until it arrives in Limbe. The exercise is another example of the United States, France, and Cameroon working to improve cooperation and regional capacity in the Gulf of Guinea.
