U.S. Embassy Organizes Seminar on Legal Aspects of Combating Corruption in Cameroon

The U.S. Embassy, with the support of the Government of Cameroon and the President of the Republic of Cameroon, His Excellency Paul Biya, held a four-day seminar on Legal Aspects of Combating Corruption September 8 – 11, 2008 in Yaounde. Content for the seminar was organized and provided by the Defense Institute of International Legal Studies (DIILS), a U.S. Department of Defense branch institute, under the Defense Security Cooperation Agency.
The event, opened by Ambassador Janet Garvey, brought together parliamentarians, military officers, high-ranking police officers, and representatives from CONAC, ANIF, and the NGO BONNE CONSCIENCE, to discuss strategies to curb corruption in Cameroon. The goal of this forum was to draw attention to the imperative to fight corruption throughout the public sector, especially in the armed forces, and to foster enhanced communication among actors working to fight corruption in Cameroon. The forum included interventions from prominent individuals in the fight against corruption in Cameroon. Experts from DIILS shared experiences from the United States and other countries. Topics discussed included Integrity and Corruption in Public Service, International Legal Framework for Combating Corruption, Transparency and Accountability Mechanisms, Money Laundering and Asset Forfeiture, and the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.
