U.S Ambassador Launches Tree Planting Operation near Lake Chad

Yaounde September 9, 2009

The U.S. Ambassador to Cameroon, Janet Garvey signed an agreement on August 27 in Kousseri that will provide $98,000 (450,800,000 Fcfa) for reforestation efforts to protect Lake Chad and prevent further desertification in the region.  Cameroonian Minister of Forests and Wildlife, the Chadian Minister of Environment, and local political and traditional leaders attended the multinational signing ceremony, held near the Cameroonian-Chadian border.

The Organisme de Développement, d’Etude, de Formation et de Conseils (ODECO), which will administer the grant under the Food for Progress Program, will use the funds to develop tree nurseries in partnership with local communities, provide wells to supply water for the nurseries, and carry out the reforestation of areas around Lake Chad.  The project will complement the efforts of the Cameroonian Ministry of Forests and Wildlife to promote the planting of 90,000 trees in the North and Far North Regions.

The tree planting operation is part of the U.S. Embassy in Cameroon’s continued support for environmental protection.
