AFRICOM Funds Humanitarian Assistance Projects in the North and Far North regions.

Yaounde, 2 November 2009

On September 14, members of the Defense Attaché Office of the U.S. Embassy in Cameroon traveled to Maroua and Garoua in the Far North and North regions of Cameroon for the inauguration and monitoring of eight Humanitarian Assistance projects.  The projects, which cost approximately $150,000 (67,500,000 Fcfa), were financed by the U.S. AFRICA COMMAND (AFRICOM) Humanitarian Assistance Program. The later seeks to improve the lives of the civilian population through the construction, renovation, and repair of buildings, bridges, and wells.

The six projects inaugurated included a maternity ward at Mozogo and a total of twelve wells in Foulaye, Golonsquare, Pouss, Kay Kay, Foulou, and Zoui Zoui.  Access to clean drinking water is a major developmental issue in the arid North and Far North regions, and the construction of the wells was greatly appreciated by the local authorities, traditional leaders, and members of the community who gathered as the first buckets of water were pumped.

Additionally, the team monitored the progress being made on a hospital ward in Mayo Lope capable of housing 50 patients and two classrooms for disabled children in Garoua, both of which are also being funded by AFRICOM.
