Waste Management Options Explored on World Environment Day
In honor of World Environment Day, the Embassy hosted June 5 an event with Cameroonian government officials, civil society, NGOs, and students to highlight the importance of “think globally, act locally,” a term coined in 1972 by Rene Dubos, an advisor to the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment. The theme of the event was “Waste Management,” which provided an opportunity for high level representatives from the government to interact with civil society and student groups to learn and discuss waste management in Yaoundé. There were speakers from the Ministries of Environment, Urban Development and Housing, and the Yaoundé Urban Council. Students from "Global Learning and Observation for the Benefit of the Environment" (GLOBE) presented environmental news from around the world, a skit, and a presentation about waste management. CIPRE, a Food for Progress grantee, made a presentation on how waste can be transformed into useable products. The Ministers of Basic Education and Youth Affairs, Haman Adama and Adoum Garoua, along with Parliamentarians from the Caucus of Parliamentarians for Environmental Protection also attended the event.
